The City of Winnipeg
Neighbourhood Profiles
is source for custom Census data supplied by Statistics Canada to the City of Winnipeg.
Advantages: Neighbourhoods have names, rather than numbers. Geographic boundaries are
determined by local social scientists, so reflect real neighbourhoods. Data is also given as
percents, and is compared with the City as a whole. This site requires no special software,
and there are no restrictions on use, it is open to the public to use.
Disadvantages: It is hard to determine the exact boundaries of some areas. It does not
provide complete Profile data, only the more important variables. It does not contain any
cross-tabulation data, only univariate.
Similar data is available online for
2001 and
1996.
Similar information for 1991 (electronic) and 1986 (paper) are available within the Data
Library Services Office. Similar information , but not as detailed, for 1981 can be found in
the publication "Winnipeg Area Characterization" found Elizabeth Dafoe Library, Government
Documents section, call number GovDocs Can6 Man3 Win1 En9.7 C52 1987 v1.

E-STAT: In-Library use (open
to the
public).
E-LIBRARY:
remote login to E-STAT for current faculty, students and staff.
It allows
users to access all Census Profile variables from 1986-2001.
Advantages: E-STAT contains all Profile variables for selected geographies. It is
relatively user-friendly. It is easy to create a thematic map for any of these 1709
variables, without any knowledge of Geographic Information Systems. You can change data
to percents. No special software is required.
Disadvantages: As a standard Statistics Canada product, it uses Census tract numbers,
rather than names. Although easy to use, it requires many steps. It does not cover all
standard geographies, and does not include cross-tabulation data. Access is restricted,
you must be on campus or using the proxy server. It is available to public walk-in users, but is restricted by IP range. There is a
help handout.

2001
Census
: Remote login for current faculty, students and staff.
Advantages: This site includes access to cross-tabulation data. It is better set up
to handle large volumes of data. It provides access to all standard geographies except
Dissemination area and Forward sortation area. You can get maps showing the exact boundaries
of Census areas.
Disadvantages: To access large volumes of data you must have access to and knowledge of
how to use Beyond 20/20 software. Access is restricted, so you must be on campus or using
the proxy server. Sometimes, you must download a large amount of data in order to get that
portion you need. There is a
help
handout for Beyond 20/20 software.
