The book begins with the author and her husband in the throes of building a lo g cabin to be finished by the time the snows are due in September. It is an account of their first year of building and living in their new home. The locale is an abandoned farm in southern Ontario with its fields and wooded areas, an old tumbling down barn, and a secret lake. The twelve chapters, each featuring an episode with the wild animals living on the land, have titles such as "Howls in the Night," "An Unexpected House Guest," "Tails After Dark."

The author describes with sensitivity her observations and experiences as each newly discovered wild animal makes its presence known. The reader's interest is easily sustained from beginning to end. At the same time the reader gains an appreciation for the ways of wild animals while learning the importance of the conservation of wildlife. Eighteen mammals and one bird are featured.

The cover of the well-bound book is inviting with its expertly drawn animal heads arranged wreath-like and in colour. The drawings inside are black and white, again very life-like. Two maps of the farm are displayed and one illustration of imprints of animal tracks in the snow is included, all three on double-page spreads.

The illustrator, Olena Kassian, will be familiar to the readers of OWL Magazine. The author, Foster, has written for both OWL and CHICKADEE. She has also written three books on wildlife, two for adults and one for children. Foster is also known for her TV involvement in nature programming, and as co-host of the international syndicated TV Specials, Wild Canada.
