THE GHOST OF PIRATE WALK
Volume 11 Number 3.
The Ghost of Pirate Walk is sure to appeal to young mystery buffs. The book is one of the Jean Pac uniform editions by Canadian authors featuring Canadian locales. This one takes place on the East Coast and even includes a small history lesson on privateers.
The plot is fairly simple. Ricky Tyler, his friend Tony, and Ricky's sister Erica Ann try to solve the mystery of the latter's missing teddy bear. Compounding the mystery is the disappearance of Mrs. Tyler's pearl necklace and reports of a ghost swooping down on people at night out on Pirate's Walk. Undaunted by fear of the ghost and the disapproval of the chief of police, the boys sneak out to investigate the ghost. Plenty of clues as to the real identity of the ghost are given, so some children will discover for themselves that it is really an owl who thought Erica Ann's teddy bear was a live animal.
Although this story slightly resembles a Hardy Boys' adventure, it is refreshing to see publishers finally giving children interesting, easily readable books that deal with their own country and history rather than the American-biased KidLit we usually see. Most eight to eleven-year-olds will relate to the characters and the blue jean cover will catch their eye.
