Who's Who in Canadian Literature is a biographic and bibliographic guide to Canadian poets, playwrights, novelists, short story and children's writers. It is divided into three sections. The first is an alphabetic index of entries for some eight hundred authors, who had to be living as of July 1983 and active in the field of literature to be included. There are no journalists, historians, or essayists. The entries for each author follow, again in an alphabetic sequence. Generally speaking, they include name, date and place of birth, membership in various writers' organizations, awards, mailing address, and bibliography. Information was gathered by questionnaire, and, since one is dependent upon what one's respondents choose to answer, entries vary, and the length of entry is no indication of any writer's relative importance. There has been no attempt at critical assessment. French-Canadian writers' entries are in French. There are a few typographical errors, but the text is generally clean and informative. An index of titles cited completes the work.

Who's Who in Canadian Literature appeared almost at the same time as the new Oxford Companion to Canadian Literature,* and it is somewhat unfortunate that the new Oxford volume has overshadowed the Who's Who. Both are useful, but if one must make a choice, the Oxford Companion should be first consideration because of its critical commentary and because the Who's Who includes only living authors.
