These slides examine what is meant by style in art. The eighteen slides, showing eleven paintings from the permanent collection of the Art Gallery of Hamilton, have been grouped into three lessons which demonstrate respectively: the change of style through historical periods from traditional to abstract: the change of style in the work of one artist, Lawren Harris; and the development of a certain style in a particular region. Throughout the commentary, emphasis has been placed on the various elements which constitute the style of a painting: colour, light shape, brush strokes, composition, and subject matter. An introductory guide for the teacher, entitled "How to Look at a Picture," uses two additional slides to show how to use these works of art to develop visual awareness, questioning and research skills, and evaluation techniques. Highly recommended.
