Only one thing made me finish this book and that was knowing that a review was required of me. The novel is not well written and it needs an editor to reduce it to half its present length and then clean up the bad grammar. Having said that, there is, nevertheless, some merit in the book.

This novel chronicles an Okanagan youth's travels across the continent. The young man's name is Tommy, but early in the book he acquires the nickname "Slash" because of a knifing incident that lands him in jail. Slash is searching for some meaning in his life, and, through much of the book, this meaning seems to be tied up with the Indian rights movement of the 1970s.

There are people tied to the movement as well. For some of these people, alcohol and drugs are at the end of their search. When their search succeeds, they go no further. For others, the aim is to further political causes, and, for still others, the result is a spirituality that allows them to draw on inner resources (resources based in their native culture). Slash manages to experience and survive all of these stages.

Slash is well bound in a quality paperback format with an eye-catching full-colour cover that shows a long-haired native youth provocatively holding a knife. The print is large and easy to read.

Although the book is poorly written, to date, few, if any, writers have shed light on the topic with the view expressed by this author. For this reason, a library with a native section may want to add Slash, at least until something better comes along.
