Volume 15 Number 4
1987 July

This beautiful presentation of ten legends from Canada's ethno-cultural heritage succeeds Tales of Heritage I (Upstairs Gallery, 1981). Their publication was made possible through the generosity of the patrons, Mr. and Mrs. Vern Heinricks in memory of their daughter Ceci, and several sponsors. We owe thanks to all of them.

Like its predecessor, this volume includes ten legends, each retold in its native language followed by poetic translations in Canada's two official languages. Each story was chosen by the author to "emphasize the dignity resulting from a sure sense of one's cultural identity," while the first volume celebrated pride in heritage. The language varies in difficulty, hence the broad interest range. The author has prepared a slide presentation of all twenty legends to accompany a lecture and is working on a film presentation.

Cultures represented in the legends are Egyptian, Spanish, Inuit. Indian, Brazilian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Irish, and Scottish. Each one is accorded an explanatory paragraph in the book's six-page introduction. The illustrative engravings, ranging in colour from muted to vibrant, lend an appealing air of fantasy and romanticism.

Tales of Heritage II is a highly recommended purchase for secondary school libraries, adult education, ESL. FSL, and heritage language programs. The paper-bound edition reviewed is sufficiently well bound for normal class use.
