IDA MAE EVANS EATS ANTS
Volume 18 Number 6
Mary Blakeslee has previously written over a dozen books including the Lemon Street Gang adventures for public school age children. The current short novel concerns eleven-year-old Ida Mae, who finds her new school boring and elitist. Ida consults with her eccentric aunt, who assists Ida in creating an outlandish image for herself to win attention if not friends. The new image wins Ida more interest and problems than she could have imagined. Along the way young readers are treated to some amusing scenes and some lessons about fitting in. As a parable the novel is successful. It is also successful as a book for young children coping with different cultures and experiences in public school. Recommended for all elementary schools.
