Patrick Watson narrates this excellent series, 'The Struggle for Democracy." Originally produced in association with the CBC and PBS networks, this series of ten episodes was shown on national television. The series examines the questions What is a democracy and How does it work?
Volume six of the series, The Last Citizens, travels from India to Switzerland, Iceland and Canada to examine women's role in democratic society. In India, the world's youngest democracy, we examine the role of women within a society that still views women as property. The "soldier citizen" government of Switzerland is shown as it evolves from a male-dominated society to one of equality between the sexes.
In Iceland the role of women in society has led to the acceptance of women in government, while here in Canada the constitutional challenge was to incorporate equality of the sexes into the charter of rights. Watson shows us just how close Canada came to not recognizing this equality in the Constitution.
The series is excellent. The photography and technical quality are unsurpassed. This series is highly recommended and should be included in all political science courses as mandatory viewing.
