Children who love books about Sam the puppy will be delighted with this offering from Mary Labatt. The story is again aimed at beginning readers who will appreciate the repetition of words, the few sentences on each page and the simplicity of the text.

Sam ventures to the seashore in this story and is very happy and excited, sure that she will have fun there. However, after being denied part of the picnic lunch, being splashed by a wave while trying to walk in the water, and being pinched on the nose by a crab, among other adventures, shedoesn't think the seaside is so much fun anymore. That is, until she discovers something wonderful - a dead fish! She loves the smell and rolls in the fish to cover herself in it.

Joan and Bob packed up.

They took the blanket.

They took the basket.
They held their noses.

"You stink, Sam," they said.

"I do not stink," thought Sam.

"I smell wonderful!"

Marisol Sarrazin's delightful illustrations are perfectly suited to the story and will please readers of any age. The illustration of Sam 'smelling wonderful' conveys utter happiness and, like all of the illustrations, it helps the reader to identify what is happening in the story.

Highly Recommended.
