Hanna Bear's Christmas gives children and adults a chance to look at Christmas from a different perspective. Hanna generally sleeps through Christmas because, as she says, "that is what bears do." However, this year she gathers her friends around before settling in for her winter's sleep and makes them all promise that they will wake her up for Christmas. They agree but have a terrible time rousing her, and it finally takes all of their combined efforts to wake her:

Together they butted, and scraped, and flapped, and thumped so loudly that finally, FINALLY, Hanna Bear poked her head out, rubbed her sleepy eyes, and said, "What's all the ruckus?"

"MERRY CHRISTMAS, HANNA BEAR!"

Hanna, who has never seen deep snow or Christmas lights or a Christmas tree, is delighted with what she sees, particularly when her friends walk her to the village and show her the lighted houses and people celebrating inside them. However, after many thanks to her friends for waking her for Christmas, she has to go back to her den to her winter's sleep.

Cassidy's illustrations are very colorful and expressive and are as important to the book as Devine's text which is sure to delight readers in this age group with its characters and the sound effects of the animals' trying to wake up Hanna Bear. Hanna Bear's Christmas is truly refreshing with its story celebrating some of the joys of the season which may be less obvious in our busy world.

Highly Recommended.
