excerpt:

One morning, a box was delivered to the shop. When Mr. Kringle looked inside, he found a small stuffed bunny, no more than eight inches tall. "Ho, ho, ho!" he chuckled. "What a cute little bunny."

A picture book aimed at Christmas giving, The Little Toy Shop is a variation on The Velveteen Rabbit about a toy that is rejected but ends up being loved. Unfortunately, it does not have the deeper insights of The Velveteen Rabbit and becomes a rather light story about a toy bunny. The bunny languishes in a toy shop until it is found by a little girl whom "he knew this was the child who would love him forever." However, the bunny is sold to a rich, spoiled young girl who quickly tires of him and discards him with some trash. A dog picks the bunny out of the trash and drops him in the river where he is spotted by Mr. Kringle, who recognizes the bunny and makes sure it is left under the tree of the first child. While this story is rather implausible, young children will enjoy the happy ending.

internal art

The pictures in this book (also by Frances Wolfe), done in oils on Masonite, are full page and colourful and perhaps more effective than the story. Children will love their rich textures and expressive features.

The Little Toy Shop could be used as a read-aloud story for Nursery to grade 1 or as an early reader for grades 1-3.

Recommended with reservations.
