excerpt:

He grabbed my legs. I kicked hard to try to stop him. The rope around my neck got tighter. The man was strong. He shoved my legs into the trunk. Then he slammed the trunk shut, and I felt myself go cold all over. I was going to die.

Streetwise teenager Ethan thinks he has finally overcome his criminal past. He has been staying away from his old gang, his foster family, the Ashdales, are kind and supportive, and he has a new, legal hobby: taking pictures for his youth program assignment. Ethan is finally starting to get a hold of his life. But when he unknowingly photographs a crime, faces from his past return, and Ethan is thrust back into a world of fear and violence. This time his street smarts wonít be enough to save him. In order to survive, Ethan has to learn to trust Officer Firelli, the beat cop who was once his enemy, and leave his troubled past behind, once and for all.

Moving between urban and rural settings with an underlying message of environmental conservatism, Picture This is a fast paced and suspenseful thriller. McClintock takes the story of a troubled teen and gives it a hopeful twist without taking away from the gritty reality of his situation. As Ethan adjusts to his new life, he struggles with issues of family, trust, forgiveness and courage. Writing in the first person, McClintock captures an authentic teen voice. Ethan is a believable character to whom adolescent readers can relate. Picture This is a great short novel that is sure to hold a reluctant readerís interest.

Highly Recommended.
