Aquatan, by Mac Park, is part of the new fantasy series “Boy vs. Beast: Battle of the Worlds.” The story is about a young Border Guard, Kai Masters, and his dogbot, BC. Kai’s job is to protect Earth from the Mega-beasts in Beastium, but the Border Guards can only use battle gear they have already earned. When Border Guards do well, they can earn upgrades and new battle gear, but, if they do not battle well, they will lose upgrades and points. In Aquatan, Kai and BC fight their first water battle. They must get past green slime and jelly-fish until they meet up with a little beast which turns into a large beast and the real battle begins.
Aquatan is full of action and adventure. The book is a beginner chapter book with large font and several of the words bolded to capture the reader’s attention. The illustrations are black and white, and several of the illustrations are of futuristic gadgets which are used in the book. Aquatan is geared for boys ages 7-9, but many older reluctant readers will also enjoy it. The four pages of comic strip showing the final battle with also be a hit with the boys.
Aquatan is fast paced and easy to read, and it will certainly capture a young boy’s interest with its scary beasts and fancy weapons.
