Anouk Ricard’s Anna & Froga: Thrills, Spills, and Gooseberries is a wonderful graphic book that encompasses a series of comic strips starring a little girl named Anna and her animal friends, Froga, Ron, Christopher and Bubu. In this series, stories include: “Bubu’s Vacation”, “Froga’s Garden”, “Maestro Bubu”, “The Fair”, “Rainy Day Games”, and “Sick Day”.

One of my all time favourite strips can be found in “Froga’s Garden” and is aptly named “The Cabbage”:

Anna: What’s that?

Froga: Cabbage.

Anna: Eugh! I hate cabbage.

Froga: Yeah, me too.

Anna: So why did you plant it?

Froga: It’s for the snails, so they don’t eat the other vegetables.

Anna: Does it work?

Froga: No, those slimeballs don’t like cabbage!

The entire book is filled with amazing comics like this that will really resonate with children. I especially liked the characters’ dialogue because it is simple and witty. Children of all ages will like Ricard’s dry humour and punch lines. Young readers who are fans of joke books in particular will really get a kick out of this book.

But for me, the heart of Anna & Froga: Thrills, Spills, and Gooseberries is found in the illustrations. Ricard’s comics are bright and colourful and will catch the attention of readers both young and old. I particularly liked the fact that Ricard blended the comic strip genre with that of the picture book to create a wonderful reading experience for children of all ages.

Highly Recommended.
