I'm having a few issues at school. My teacher, Mrs. Winters, and I don't see eye to eye. To Mrs. Winters and my mom that means that when Mrs. Winters talks I don't always listen very well. I think sometimes she doesn't listen very well when I'm talking. I don't say that, though. That would be Very Bad Manners on my part.

Just this morning I tried to tell her that the class gecko, T-Rex, was stuck in the radiator, but she said "Not To Interrupt Her For The Fourth Time This Morning!" She seemed kind of screechy so I said, in my most patient and calming voice, "When I get upset it helps me to calm down by taking three deep breaths."

Then I had to take a time out in the hall.

So begins this junior novel from the perspective of eight-year-old Connor, a kid with Asperger Syndrome. Jodi Carmichael, a Manitoba author and advocate for autism, has created an authentic and interesting voice in young Connor, and the simple and straightforward plot of this book supports a captivating read from start to finish.

Whimsically illustrated with black and white drawings by Sarah Ackerley, Spaghetti is NOT a Finger Food is an age approriate read for its intended audience.

Although the ending seems too-good-to-be-true, readers will cheer for the personal triumph of a boy who has completely won our hearts.

Highly Recommended.

Bev Brenna is the author of 11 books for young people, including The White Bicycle, third in a trilogy about a character with ASD and shortlisted for a 2013 Governor General's Literary Award.
