So begins this junior novel from the perspective of eight-year-old Connor, a kid with Asperger Syndrome. Jodi Carmichael, a Manitoba author and advocate for autism, has created an authentic and interesting voice in young Connor, and the simple and straightforward plot of this book supports a captivating read from start to finish.
Whimsically illustrated with black and white drawings by Sarah Ackerley, Spaghetti is NOT a Finger Food is an age approriate read for its intended audience.
Although the ending seems too-good-to-be-true, readers will cheer for the personal triumph of a boy who has completely won our hearts.
Bev Brenna is the author of 11 books for young people, including The White Bicycle, third in a trilogy about a character with ASD and shortlisted for a 2013 Governor General's Literary Award.
