excerpt: Leonardo da Vinci, the famous artist and scientist, may have been the most interesting napper. According to folklore, he never got a full night's sleep. He just napped for 15 minutes every four hours - a total of just one and a half hours of sleep a day!
Using an appealing
mix of research and trivia, Trudee Romanek provides insight into the fascinating
topic of sleep. Chapters include how the brain works during sleep, the
stages of sleep and disorders such as narcolepsy. Pronunciation keys are
included for learning such new words as "suprachiasmatic nuclei (SOO-pra-ki-az-MAT-ik
NOO-klee-i). Sidebars entitled "You Try It" describe techniques for remembering
dreams and an experiment to see if you are getting enough shut eye.
As in the previous "Mysterious You" titles,
the writing is lively and engaging. Readers can easily relate to information
about such universal sleep phenomena as snoring, nightmares, and atonia
(the feeling of being rooted to the spot while dreaming). Rose Cowles'
colorful, stylized cartoons match the fast pace of the text and add
punch and pizzazz.
Zzz...:The Most Interesting Book You'll
Ever Read About Sleep is nonfiction writing at its best, and the
book will be great for projects or bedtime reading!
Highly recommended. Linda
