Down Manitoba’s River Road and Enjoy the Fur Trade
Experience!
Join us for a leisurely tour down Manitoba’s famous
RIVER ROAD Heritage Parkway on Sunday, May 16. We begin at 8:00 a.m.
at the Sheraton Hotel. Just one half hour away, we enter the scenic
River Road Heritage Parkway, renowned for its sweeping views of the Red
River fur trade route and its remarkable history. Along the way we
will visit St. Andrews Church and Rectory National Historic Site, the oldest
stone church in western Canada. Built in 1849, St. Andrew’s continues to be
an active parish to this day.
We continue down River Road to Kenosewun Centre (Cree for “there are many
fishes”) in Lockport, an archaeological site dating back 3000 years.
Carbonized corn was discovered here dating back to the 1400s, making this
the earliest known site of farming on the Canadian Prairies.
We will stop for a scenic lunch at the famous Skinners Restaurant on the
banks of the Red. Known for their foot-long hotdogs and NHL nostalgia
photographs, Skinners is a Manitoba institution.
After lunch, we will visit Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site, one of
the oldest stone fur trading post still intact in North America. Travel
back in time as costumed staff take you on a tour of the original fort,
which has been restored to how it would have appeared in the mid-1800s.
We will arrive back at the Sheraton around 4:00 pm.
The cost will be $20.00 per person, and includes entrance fee
to Lower Fort Garry (does not include lunch at Skinners). A minimum
number of participants is required. Register by Thursday 12:00 pm.
