We are delighted to welcome you to Winnipeg, the University of Manitoba, and "City Limits." We anticipate a lively two days of critical debate and discovery. Interest in "the city" continues unabated, across several academic disciplines. "City Limits" takes full advantage of this multi-disciplinary interest. Our roster of presenters includes scholars and critics from six disciplines whose interests span richly varied aspects of the historical European city. Our programme covers topics ranging from ghettos to gardens; pageantry to plagues; mapping to immuring. Our speakers focus on cities from Amsterdam to Milan; London to Prague; Edinburgh to Augsburg; Norwich to Paris. Our plenary speakers – Dr. Christopher Friedrichs (University of British Columbia) on Friday and Dr. Judith Walkowitz (Johns Hopkins University) on Saturday – engage definitive questions about early-modern and late-Victorian cities respectively: Dr. Friedrichs will distinguish Asian and European urban history and life in order to characterize more sharply the city in early- modern Europe; Dr. Walkowitz will investigate the geopolitical implications of body politics in order to throw into relief cosmopolitan, global consumption. Once again, welcome to "City Limits." Conveners: City
