Speaker Abstract

Diabetes: A Manitoba Strategy From Policy to Action

Noella L. Depew, RN, BA

In 1996 Manitoba's Minister of Health declared diabetes to be a major public health issue as well as occurring in epidemic proportions in Aboriginal people and seniors (+55) of all populations.

Utilizing the principles of population health, and a healthy public policy approach a unique, broad based, collaborative, intersectoral process was initiated.

This process resulted in the development and release of a strategic plan to reduce the incidence and prevalence of diabetes and its complications.

The plan includes over 50 diabetes health goals and over 150 diabetes health actions to address diabetes prevention, education, care, research and support.

This presentation will discuss the process and implementation of the strategy from a healthy public policy, population health perspective.
