Speaker Abstract

Patterns of Glycosylated Hemoglobin and Fasting Plasma Glucose in a Population with Diagnosed and Non-Diagnosed Diabetes

Dale E. Gelskey and Robert Tate, University of Manitoba R3T 2N2.

The objective of this study was to show the relationships between Diabetes indicators in a population of diagnosed and non-diagnosed people. The methods used included the use of the Manitoba Heart Health Survey database (N=2100) to link diabetes status with laboratory measurements of indicators such as glycosylated hemoglobin and fasting plasma glucose. The results indicate that there is a strong correlation between the indicators and diabetes status. The use of these indicators should be considered when doing case-finding and early detection for diabetes in population studies.

Support for the research came from the National Health Research & Development Program, Manitoba Health, & Heart & Stroke Foundation of Manitoba
