OMEGA 3 FATTY ACIDS CAN PREVENT DEATH IN PATIENTS WITH HEART DISEASE

EATING FISH PROTECTS HEART

Winnipeg, June 2, 1999 - The International Conference on Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease, being held in Winnipeg this week from June 3-6, is pleased to welcome Dr. Bruce Holub of the University of Guelph, Ontario. Dr. Holub will present his research findings highlighting the impressive therapeutic benefits of omega-3 fatty acids for both treating heart disease and preventing it.

The apparent protective effects of omega-3 fatty acids as found in fish have recently been supported by large recent clinical trials using supplementary fish oil concentrates. These studies have indicated a significant lowering of heart disease death rates in 11,000 heart attack victims who consumed concentrated omega-3 fish oil supplements.

Dr. Holub will be presenting his research findings at the ICDCD on Friday, June 4, 1999 from 1:30 to 3:20 p.m. at the Winnipeg Convention Centre.

The International Conference on Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease has attracted approximately 300 delegates from around the world to Winnipeg to share information and research study results.

The International Conference on Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease is being chaired by Dr. Aubie Angel, President of the Diabetes Research and Treatment Centre in Winnipeg, and Dr. Narjanan S. Dhalla, Director of the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences.
