University of North Dakota
Grand Forks

October 16-17, 2009

The LCMND's 50th ANNIVERSARYConference

2009 LCMND Presidents:
Michelle Sauer's & Adam Kitzes, UND

The Linguistic Circle of Manitoba and North Dakota will be celebrating its 50th anniversary this October 16-17 at the University of North Dakota.

In recognition of this milestone event, and in the spirit of encouraging widespread participation, we will have a series of open sessions.

Rather than impose a narrowly conceived “conference theme” arbitrarily, we invite individuals to submit papers on topics of their own choosing. Ideally, this will provide an opportunity for regional scholars to assess our current interests, and to establish new themes for future conferences.

In the meantime, we are soliciting reflections on the status and direction of the organization:

What are the historical narratives and sub-narratives that might make up a history of the Circle?

How have these histories been documented?

What has been the significance of regional conferences in general, or more particularly of a local conference in the midcontinent region?

What has been the impact of various media technologies on the notion of regionalism, and how have members sought to address that impact?

What role will a conference like the LCMND play over the next 50 years?

Our keynote speaker will be:

Lisa Weston of Fresno State University

In accordance with tradition, the LCMND will have sessions in English and French.

Inquiries and paper proposals (abstracts of 250 word to three pages, or full papers of about 20 minutes reading time) should be sent by email to Michelle Sauer and Adam Kitzes at the following addresses:

Michelle.M.Sauer@und.edu
Adam.Kitzes@und.nodak.edu

Please send your submissions by September 15, 2009
