Editor's Note

The University of Manitoba Journal of Translation is a semi-annual electronic publication. Each issue will consist of two major components: the English translation of Chinese authors and the Chinese translation of Canadian authors. Its first issue (Vol.1, No.1) will be officially released in February, 2002. The purpose is to introduce Chinese writers and their works to English readers and to introduce Canadian writers and their works to Chinese readers. The Journal will focus on writers in the past 50 years whose literary works are highly accomplished, but who have been little translated, or not yet translated. It is our hope that the on-line Journal of Translation we are creating will serve as a point where the literary minds and talents from both Canada and China will meet, connect and interact with one another.

We are publishing our Promotional Issue to let readers know of our new endeavour and to invite moral support, feedback, suggestions and involvement on the part of scholars, academics, colleagues, and friends on both sides of the Pacific Ocean. We intend to make this Journal a publication of high scholarly standards; and also one which will attract a broad popular readership.

Our deepest gratitude goes to Faculty of Arts, University of Manitoba, whose funding has paved the way for establishing our online literary translation journal. We also thank our website creator for her dedicated work that has materialized our vision.
