Gary Glavin
Associate Vice-President (Research)

Gary Glavin was appointed Associate Vice-President (Research) at the University of Manitoba for a second term of five years effective July 1, 2014. Previously, Dr. Glavin served as Head of the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, in the Faculty of Health Sciences and Associate Vice-President (Research).

Dr. Glavin received his PhD in 1975 and completed post-doctoral training at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD. He served on interchange to the Public Health Agency of Canada’s National Microbiology Lab, where he was Deputy Scientific Director-General. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of Canadian Blood Services, CancerCare Manitoba, the Manitoba Institute of Child Health, St-Boniface Hospital and the Strategic Advisory Council for the George and Fay Yee Centre for Healthcare Innovation.

As Associate Vice-President (Research), Dr. Glavin provides overall assistance to the Vice-President (Research and International) on all matters related to research development, administration and promotion. Specific responsibilities include providing oversight of:

  • Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)
  • Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI)
  • Canada Research Chairs Program
  • Genome Canada/Prairie
  • Animal Care and Use
  • Human Ethics
  • Health Research Infrastructure
  • The Dr. Paul H.T. Thorlakson Foundation Fund
  • Research Manitoba (formerly MHRC)
  • Children's Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba (CHRIM) 
  • Manitoba Medical Service Foundation (MMSF)
