Walking on Thin Ice

David Barber, Canada Research Chair in Arctic system science, discussed his climate change research in a presentation titled Walking on Thin Ice. Barber, director of the Centre for Earth Observation Science (CEOS), described the impact global warming is having on Arctic sea ice, which is currently melting at a rate of 70,000 square kilometers each year, an area equal to the size of Lake Superior. Barber also highlighted the multidisciplinary nature of climate science, the challenges associated with conducting research in the Arctic, and the many research opportunities that will be available in the coming years.
