Summer Position (up to 12 weeks)

May 30 – August 20, 2016

Salary: $13.50 per hour / 35 hours a week

 

Summary of Duties:

The incumbent will work in two areas of the gallery – the exhibition spaces and the collection - with the primary focus on permanent collection related tasks and secondary focus on gallery exhibition activities.

 

Assisting with the collection, the incumbent will:

  • Write condition reports on works requiring conservation, identifying works requiring re-framing or matting, and cutting mats and preparing frames;
  • Work extensively entering information into the collection database including: photographing artworks and adding photographs to database; locating all artwork images, inventory, within single storage location; editing current database records to standardize information formatting;
  • Write brief profiles of individual artists, and add C.V.s, bibliographies where available; add exhibition histories to collection artworks; 
  • Perform light maintenance work on collection vault.

Assisting with the Gallery, the incumbent will:

  • Assist with the installation and take down of exhibitions;
  • Greet and provide the visitors with information and explanations concerning the gallery's exhibitions and collections.

Education and Experience:

As an ideal candidate, you

  • are enrolled as a student in the field of Art History, Studio Arts, Architecture, Museum Studies, or have an acceptable combination of education, training and experience
  • are eligible to participate in the Young Canada Works program (See Young Canada Works Program Qualifications below).
  • have proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop or other digital imaging software, and have experience using a digital camera.
  • * Experience handling art, knowledge of database management and Canadian art would be beneficial.
  • * Experience working or volunteering in public gallery, museum or library is desirable.

Young Canada Works Program Qualifications:

  • Must be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada; Note: Non-Canadian students holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible.
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada;
  • Must be between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;
  • Must be willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment;
  • Will not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while employed with YCW;
  • Have been a full-time student (as defined by your educational institution) in the semester preceding the YCW job;
  • Intend to return to full-time studies in the semester following the YCW job.
