Winnipeg artist Paul Butler's subject is contemporary advertising, its reflection of urban social values, its fascination with superficial beauty, and its glamorization of life. He works in the collage tradition by cutting up magazines and then pasting, reorganizing, and sometimes obscuring the ad imagery with materials like duct tape and vinyl. He also photographs many of his collages in order to restore to them the seamless beauty of the glossy magazine. Butler's Gallery One One One exhibition was curated by Cliff Eyland and was Butler's first solo museum show. Butler is a visual artist and also the director of "the othergallery" in Winnipeg. He has had solo exhibitions at the Angell Gallery in Toronto and Plug In Gallery in Winnipeg. Group exhibitions include the Winnipeg Art Gallery, the Douglas Udell Gallery, TRUCK Gallery, the Eyesaw Gallery in Tokyo, and the International Art Fair in Toronto. Butler has received several visual arts grants from the Manitoba Arts Council and been reviewed by the Globe and Mail, CBC Canada Now, Border Crossings Magazine and the Winnipeg Free Press. Butler is also a board member of Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art. Curated by Cliff Eyland PAUL BUTLER: "Getting there is half the fun!" happened 12-26 October 2001 at Gallery One One One. On September 22, 2001 at St. Norbert Arts Centre Butler organized a "Collage Party" to accompany his Gallery One One One exhibition.
