Caven Atkins: Focuses on the maturation of Atkin's work from 1929-1934 during his
residence in Winnipeg. Atkins (b. 1907 in London, Ontario) studied at the Winnipeg School
of Art from 1925-28 under L. LeMoine FitzGerald (see FITZGERALD, L.L.) He worked with
the commercial art firm of Brigden's as did other local artists such as H. Eric Bergman (see
Transformation of Vision. The Works of H. Eric Bergman.), Bertram Brooker, and Charles
Comfort. Atkins later taught at the Winnipeg School of Art. Since 1945 he has resided in
Detroit, Michigan.

Marcel Breuer. born 1902, studied at the Bauhaus from 1920-24, and was a protege
of Walter Gropius. He is best known for his furniture designs of bent tubular steel. This book
gives us background on the Bauhaus movement and its influence on Breuer's development as
a designer. The remainder of the text focuses on various aspects of his furniture designs and
interiors.

Oscar Cahen.(born Denmark 1916- died Canada 1956) arrived in Canada in 1940,
first working as a commercial artist. In the late 1940s he gained recognition as an

FITZGERALD, L. L. FitzGerald's early works, primarily of landscapes and still
lifes, were representational. From 1942 until his death in 1956 his work became increasingly
abstract, though still based on the subject matter of his earlier work. These later works reflect
his interest in the ideas of geometric abstraction of Russian suprematists and non-objectivists.

The Forgotten Innovator: Alexander Musgrove (b. Scotland 1882 - d. Canada 1952)
arrived in Canada in 1913 to become principal of Winnipeg's newly formed School of Art.
This book brings to light his innovative contributions to the local and national art community
as an art educator and administrator, as the Winnipeg Art Gallery's first curator, and lastly, as
an artist.

Lawren S. Harris See Atma Buddhi Manas: The Later Work of Lawren S. Harris.
Dalla Husband. A book on this little known Manitoba born artist. Husband lived in
Paris working with the major Surrealist artists of the 20s and 30s. After the outbreak of the
War in 1939 she returned to Canada before deciding to go to Mexico. She died there in 1947.
The Winnipeg Art Gallery has a major collection of works by the artist. The book has 41
illustrations in black and white and colour. Essays by Lisa Gabrielle Mark and Maggie
Dwyer.

John Lyman. Better known in his time as an art critic, John Lyman (1886-1967)
