Program Description
The School of Art offers B.F.A. and B.F.A. Honours degrees in Art History,
with courses open to art history majors and to students in the studio areas.
Concepts of naturalism, stylization and idealism are seen in the art of ancient,
historical, modern and contemporary civilizations. Developments across the
continents and centuries address artists, movements, directions, styles, and
social contexts. Cultural comparisons, aesthetics, theory, criticism, and
research methodologies are fundamental concerns.
The second year surveys and field studies form important bases for advanced study.
A roster of third and fourth year courses further explore concepts of Western and
non-Western art from prehistory to the present. Varying specific topics are offered,
as well as field, seminar, interdisciplinary, and directed study courses. The
electives provide a flexible balanced approach to core subject areas, while
allowing a rotation of new courses addressing faculty and student interests in
current issues and new approaches to the discipline of art history.
