The Academic Learning Centre (ALC) serves graduate and undergraduate, full and part-time students at the University of Manitoba. Students are invited to access the resources available on the ALC web page, drop by the ALC to meet the learning skills instructors, and/or attend workshops in order to further develop academic strengths and skills in writing, learning and research.

ALC Office Hours

The ALC is open to students at the location in 201 Tier. Office hours are from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm from Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. We are open from 10:00 am to 4:30 pm on Tuesdays.

 

Students will be limited to a maximum of two appointments per week. 

To make an appointment, call 204-480-1481 or drop in at 201 Tier Building to make an appointment. You may also use our online booking system here. These sessions typically last 30 minutes.

ALC Services

Students are welcome to make appointments with a learning skills specialist to discuss a wide variety of learning related issues. ALC staff work with students at all levels and abilities to improve their study and writing skills. If students are coming to work on a particular paper they should bring two copies (one for themselves and one for the tutor), and ideally book an appointment at least one week in advance of the assignment due date. Unfortunately, we will not be able to work with papers on a memory key.

Writing Tutor Program

Book an appointment with a writing tutor in the Elizabeth Dafoe Library for help with the following:
  • Writing Essays
  • Writing Research Papers
Students are welcome to meet with tutors at any point of the writing process. Rather than proofreading or editing papers, tutors offer feedback to help students improve their writing skills. A student should not expect the whole paper to be looked at and "corrected" as the emphasis of the program is on helping students become better writers. Towards this end, tutors assist writers in finding areas which require improvement and then learning the ways to make those improvements.

If you would like to make an appointment with a tutor for study skills please call our office at 204-480-1481 to make an appointment. Please note that the tutors with the Writing Tutor Program are not normally able to help with study skills.
