- Any U of M International student registered in an academic program, an English Language Centre Student or a student in the International College of Manitoba (ICM)
- Students must be 17 years of age or older to be eligible for the University of Manitoba English Language Centre Homestay Program
- Visiting Scholars, Professors, Researchers, Trainees, etc.

- The application fee is non-refundable
- The administration fee and 4 month Homestay fee are non-refundable after the start of the Homestay program.
- Fees are subject to change without notice
METHODS OF PAYMENT
- Currency is Canadian Dollars (CDN)
- Payments can be made by Bank transfer, credit card, interac, or in cash (in person only). If paying by credit card please fill out the Credit Card Charge Authorization form here.
- The prefered method of payment for payments originating from outside of Canada is via GlobalPay by Western Union.
- The University of Manitoba is now working with Western Union Business Solutions to provide international students an alternative method for paying student bills. This payment option allows you to pay your student account balance in the currency of your choice and provides a simple and reliable way of initiating payments electronically.
Advantages of using the student payment portal include:
- You can easily obtain a foreign currency quote by accessing the Western Union Business Solutions GlobalPay for Students platform.
- You can pay your tuition and fees in the currency of your choice which will then be converted to Canadian Dollars.
- There are NO additional transaction charges from Western Union Business Solutions or The University of Manitoba, though you may be charged a transaction fee by your bank.
- The exchange rate is valid for 72 hours after the transaction is initiated, taking the uncertainty out of the total payment amount.
- The exchange rate is competitive when compared to most banks’ retail rates.
- Payments received will include your reference information, which ensures that your payment reaches your student account quickly.
- Payments will be electronically transmitted to University of Manitoba ensuring timely posting, typically 2 to 5 business days from the time you initiate the payment;
- Steps to making a payment using GlobalPay
Step 1: Go to the GlobalPay for Students portal
Step 2: Process Payment
- Enter student details (student name, U of M Student ID number, e-mail address)
- Enter amount of Canadian Dollars to pay
- Enter amount of Homestay Fees in the box labeled "Homestay"
- Select payment currency.*
- Finalize transaction.
Step 3: Bank Transfer
- Use payment confirmation form to make a payment with your bank.
- Your bank will transfer funds to Western Union Business Solutions and they will send the funds to the University of Manitoba.
Step 4: Payment Finalized
- The University of Manitoba will post the Canadian Dollar equivalent to your student account or Homestay account.

HOMESTAY FEE INFORMATION
- After the first 4 months, you are to pay Homestay fees ($700 per month) directly to the host at the beginning of each month.
- Students should receive a receipt for all financial transactions
ABOUT THE HOMESTAY HOSTS
- All hosts are carefully selected and interviewed before joining our program
- The hosts chosen live within 35 minutes of The University of Manitoba
- They have a keen interest in other cultures and have good English language skills
MEETING YOUR HOMESTAY HOST
- Students should plan to arrive on or after the designated move in date for the term. Please see application for move in date for the current term.
- The Homestay host will meet you at your initial point of arrival and orient you to Winnipeg, to the neighbourhood, and to local services such as banks, post offices, etc., as well as inform you of appropriate bus routes to and from the University and downtown
HOMESTAY HOMES & HOUSEHOLDS
- Students have full use of the household, such as telephone, television, living room and kitchen
- Students must use a calling card for long distance calls
- Students are expected to do their own laundry and cleaning
- Students are not expected to supervise children
- Students may be asked to participate in normal household routines and practice considerate use of household space
- Hosts will include their student in day to day activities of the family as well as cultural activities of interest to the student and host
- Students will have their own room, bed, bedding, dresser, desk and bath towels
- The host will provide you with a healthy breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily
- Breakfast and lunch materials are provided so that you can prepare these meals for yourself
- Dinner is prepared and cooked by the host
PERIOD OF ADJUSTMENT
- It usually takes about 4 months for a student to adjust to living in Canada
- We ask the host and the student to make a 4 month commitment to the placement
- Students must give one (1) month's notice before leaving their placement
UNIVERSITY SUPPORT & EXPECTATIONS
- The Homestay Coordinator is available to provide on-going support and assistance
- Please contact the Homestay Coordinator in the case of incompatibility between a student and host. If necessary, the student will be relocated to another Homestay
- Students who do not comply with the Homestay guidelines may be asked to leave the Homestay program and, in this case, are not entitled to any refund of Homestay fees paid
- Students and Homestay hosts are encouraged to keep open channels of communication and to inform the Homestay Coordinator of any problem
