The UMSU LIVING Office:
 |
The Office is located at 108A University Centre
and is open from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday,
(summer hours may be limited); phone (204) 474-9717 or toll-free
for Manitoba residents 1-800-432-1960 (extension 9717). The
office will help with rent, sublet, carpool, and buy/sell
furniture. Their email is umsuliving@umsu.ca. |
Renters: Although the University lists available accommodations,
it does not approve, license, or inspect them. Housing arrangements
are your responsibility and must be made directly between you
and the landlord.
Homeowners: Beware of scams such
as a potential renter sending you a cheque in foreign funds for
six months rent and then shortly afterward asking you to return
the money as they need the funds for their airfare to come to
Canada. You later find out that their cheque did not clear, and
you are out the money that you returned to the potential renter.
Renters: You should always call property management companies to check on suites listed online in case they are listed as part of a scam to get your first month's rent and damage deposit. You should always submit applications and damage deposits directly to the companies, not to individual renters. Any receipt for payment should come straight from the company. See story in the Winnipeg Free Press, "Online rental scam a nasty $1,200 lesson" on Thursday, July 23/09.
The University requires that all landlords offer their accommodation on the same basis as the University offers its facilities; i.e., without regard to race, colour, religion, nationality, age, marital status, ethnic origin, or source of income.
