Living in Rez is a great way to experience the U of M. There’s lots to do when you need a break. Plenty of quiet places to go when you have to study. And wherever you live, you’ll be steps away from all your classes (hit that snooze button one more time!). You can choose the residence that matches your interests and needs so you’ll have a lot in common with your neighbours. Fun stuff, serious times, and great friends. You’ll find it all living in Rez…plus you won’t ever have to worry about what’s for dinner!

You’ll ease into university life in no time. You’ll know your way around campus and see lots of familiar faces. For now, feel free to nose around the place and take a peek at life in residence. If you have any questions, just ask.

Each residence has its own unique atmosphere based on the interests of the students who live there. But wherever you live, you can expect these standard features:

University College Residence

University College is a mid-size, co-ed residence with 244 single rooms and 6 double rooms. You’ll find all the quiet space you need to study with lots to do when it’s time to socialize. With 40 people per floor, it gives a strong community and a small town feel.

Your suite at the Mauro

Make yourself at home in a comfortable hotel-like suite that includes two bedrooms, a kitchenette, private bathroom, free Internet and cable connections and air conditioning. You’ll have company when you want it, privacy when you need it and a host of conveniences to make life in residence super comfortable.
Your fully-furnished suite includes beds, desks, chairs and bookshelves. The kitchenette has a microwave and refrigerator and plenty of room to store all your favourite snacks. Your very own bathroom includes a roomy shower to invigorate you for the day ahead. Internet and cable access puts the world at your fingertips.

Nothing common about the common areas
Centrally located at the junction of Dafoe Road and Maclean Crescent, the Arthur V. Mauro Student Residence is the newest addition to on-campus living options at the University of Manitoba. There’s room for 318 students in 155 suites in this air-conditioned facility. There’s a lounge and study room on each floor, as well as a group-use kitchen, games area, fitness room, and laundry area on site.

What’s for dinner?
Living at the Arthur V. Mauro Student Residence means never having to worry about what’s for dinner. Residence students can prepare something in their suite, or they can have the option of affordable and nutritious meals from breakfast to dinner in both Pembina Hall and other campus cafeterias. A variety of meal plans are available to suit the needs of every student.

Meal Memberships (updated May 7, 2010)

The fees for Meal Memberships are included in the cost of Room and Meal Plans (see below for Residence Room Rates) for Mary Speechly Hall, Taché Hall, and University College Residence.

A Meal Membership plan is optional for students in the Arthur V. Mauro Residence and is not included in the Room Rate.

Residence students enjoy nutritious meals, in both Pembina Hall and other campus locations. Meal Memberships are compulsory for Speechly/Taché and University College residences, as cooking in residence rooms is not allowed for safety reasons. Speechly/Taché Halls and University College Residence offer different meal memberships, each with its own advantages.

Food Services Video - ARAMARK recently contracted some of our students to produce a video promoting food services on campus. We feel they did a great job and the YouManitoba channel on YouTube (administered by Public Affairs) has now included the 5-minute video. The video is also part of the Student Residence Handbook content. Feel free to check out the video.

University of Manitoba Food Services

New for 2010/11 - External Declining Balance Dollars can be added to all meal plans in the amounts of $100, $300, or $500 and are refundable (less a $25 administration fee). Fees for these plans will be added to the first term residence payment. Off-campus locations TBA. This will be a great solution for when the campus is closed during breaks - dine in, pick up, or delivery. Please contact Food Services for more information at DiningServices@umanitoba.ca.


Speechly/Taché Halls

Speechly/Taché residents enjoy the savings and convenience of a complete meal membership within the residence complex. Menus are designed to satisfy appetites and nutrition standards at the lowest cost per meal on campus.

The Pembina Hall Dining Room offers 19 meals per week - breakfast, lunch, and dinner on weekdays; brunch and dinner on Saturday, Sunday, and holidays. Bag lunches are available on request.

Three tax-free Meal Memberships are available for the academic year:

10 Meals/week $3,858
· Meals at Pembina Hall Dining Room and includes $500 Declining Balance dollars

15 Meals/week $4,131
· Meals at Pembina Hall Dining Room and includes $500 Declining Balance dollars

7 Days unlimited $4,259
· Meals at Pembina Hall Dining Room and includes $125 Declining Balance dollars


University College

University College residents have an account with a pre-determined limit (similar to a bank debit card) to buy their meals in dining areas across campus. Purchases are deducted automatically from the student's meal membership account. Students can eat at any University of Manitoba Food Services location; includes: Subway, Tim Horton's, Fresh Food Company, and all other retail locations.

This declining balance plan has three options (PST and GST exempt):

Super Saver Membership - $2,200

Bison Membership - $2,400

Premium Membership - $2,800

Additional amounts are available, if required.


Arthur V. Mauro Student Residence

Arthur V. Mauro residents have the opportunity to purchase a meal membership to suit their eating needs. Memberships include both Declining Balance and Pembina Hall Dining Room plans, making it easy for students to budget their funds.

For students eating 10 meals on campus weekly and purchasing coffee or snacks 5 times per week for one school year.

Balanced Membership:
For students eating 5-6 meals on campus weekly and purchasing coffee or snacks 3-4 times per week for one semester.

Super Saver Membership:
For students eating 5-6 meals on campus weekly and purchasing coffee & snacks 2-3 times per week for one school year.

Casual Membership:
For students eating 4-5 meals on campus weekly and purchasing coffee & snacks 3-4 times per week for 2 months.

Affiliated College Residences
St. Andrew’s College Residence

St. Andrew’s College is an independent co-ed College, affiliated with the University of Manitoba and conveniently located on the North West corner of the U of M Campus. It is home to the Faculty of Theology for the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada and the Centre for Ukrainian Canadian Studies of the University of Manitoba.

The intimate, friendly, quiet Residence has super-single, single, and double rooms available for 40 residents. The Residence rooms are furnished with the basic necessities for a comfortable study life.

The Residence is administered by the live-in Dean of Residence and Resident Assistants. Together with an active, elected St. Andrew’s College Student Council, they co-ordinate and promote social, sports, educational and cultural residence activities, in an atmosphere conducive to an enjoyable University Residence experience.

St. John’s College Residence

St. John's College is conveniently located near the University Centre, and is ideal for people seeking a smaller community on campus, where academics and residence social life are balanced in a fun, safe, and secure atmosphere. In order to help students focus on their studies, the residence has reasonable and regular quiet/study hours, which all residents agree to follow. Student staff, called Dons of Residence, help students to integrate into residence and university life, and help to foster community. We also have an International Student Representative who helps international students with their particular needs and concerns. St. John's Residence Students' Association offers an annual cycle of social events. Students are encouraged to join social and athletic programs, to excel academically, and to live and study in a close-knit community of up to 100 residents.

St. John's Residence is part of a larger community on campus called St. John's College. This College, affiliated with the Anglican Church of Canada, is a founding member College of the University. College members receive their degrees from the University of Manitoba. Students who live in residence become members of the College for a yearly fee of $28 (prorated depending on faculty and course load) and receive all the benefits of membership.
