ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS FOR INCOMING EXCHANGE STUDENTS

The following information applies only to Exchange students coming to the University of Manitoba through the International Centre for Students (ICS) Exchange Program. 

International students who are not participating in the ICS Exchange Program are directed to the following resources for the English language proficiency requirements for their program of study:

 

English Language Test Score Requirements for Incoming ICS Exchange Students

If your primary language is not English and your courses at your home university are taught in a language other than English, you will be required to demonstrate your proficiency in the use of the English language by meeting any of the options 1-6 listed below.

  1. a) Paper-Based TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
    Achieve a minimum score of 550 with no less than 50 (unscaled) in each component.
    - OR -
    b) Computer-Based TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
    Achieve a minimum score of 213 with no less than 17 in each component.
    - OR -
    c) Internet-Based TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
    Achieve a minimum score of 80 with no less than 19 on each of component.

  2. Achieve minimum scores of 4.5 in Reading, 4.5 in Listening, and 4.0 in Writing on the CanTEST (Canadian Test of English for Scholars and Trainees).

  3. Achieve a minimum score of 6.5 based upon the Academic Module on the IELTS (International English Language Testing System).

  4. Achieve a minimum score of 80 on the MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery) offered by the University of Michigan.

  5. Achieve a minimum grade of C in the University of Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English.

  6. Achieve a score of 60 or more in the CAEL (Canadian Academic English Language Assessment).

Students who meet the English language requirements for the Academic English Program for University and College Entrance (AEPUCE) may qualify for the student exchange program if they complete a semester of language study first.

To be eligible for the AEPUCE, students must have a TEOFL score of 500 (173 CBT, 64iBT with at least 15 in each component) or a CanTEST band 3.5.

Students are responsible for all applicable fees to participate in the AEPUCE program.
