HEALTH INSURANCE
International students at the University of Manitoba are required to have health coverage through either Manitoba Health or the Manitoba International Students Health Insurance Plan (MISHIP).
An extended health and dental plan is available through the University of Manitoba Students' Union.
MANITOBA HEALTH
Effective April 1, 2012, many international students studying in Manitoba will be eligible for provincial health coverage from Manitoba Health. In order to qualify for Manitoba Health coverage, a student must:
- have a valid Study Permit issued by Citizenship and Immigration Canada that is valid for a minimum of six months, AND
- live in Manitoba for a minimum of six months in a calendar year

Note for Exchange Students: Many Exchange program students coming from partner institutions will not qualify for Manitoba Health coverage and will be required to enroll in the MISHIP. Contact your U of M Exchange Coordinator for more information.
MANITOBA INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN (MISHIP)
Students who are not eligible for Manitoba Health coverage are required to enroll in the Manitoba International Students Health Insurance Plan (MISHIP), a private health insurance plan comparable to the provincial health care coverage provided by Manitoba Health.

UNIVERSITY OF MANITOBA STUDENTS' UNION (UMSU)
HEALTH AND DENTAL PLAN
The University of Manitoba Students' Union (UMSU) provides a supplementary health insurance plan that provies extended coverage beyond what is provided by Manitoba Health or the MISHIP. Eligible students are automatically enrolled in this plan at the time of registration.

Note for Exchange Students: Exchange program students coming from partner institutions are not automatically enrolled in the UMSU Health and Dental plan, but may be able to opt into it. Contact your U of M Exchange Coordinator before coming to Canada for more information if you are interested in opting into the UMSU Health and Dental Plan.
International students coming to the University of Manitoba are encouraged to review the coverage provided by Manitoba Health (or the MISHIP for those not eligible for Manitoba Health) and the University of Manitoba Students' Union (UMSU) Health and Dental Plan (if applicable) before coming to Canada and to purchase additional health, dental, and/or travel insurance from their home countries if they feel it is necessary.
