Winnipeg 's public bus transit system is called Winnipeg Transit. On the Winnipeg Transit web site you can find current bus fare rates, route maps, schedule information, travel tips, an interactive bus route planner, and much more!

FARES

There are several options for paying bus fare.

Cash: If you pay by cash, you must pay with exact change.  You can find the current bus fare on the Winnipeg Transit website:  http://www.winnipegtransit.com/en/fares/transit-fares/.

Tickets: Bus tickets can be purchased in sheets of 10 for a cost that is slightly less than the equivalent cash fare. One ticket is required each time you get on the bus unless you have a valid bus transfer.

Bus Passes: Bus passes can be purchased in several durations: monthly, weekly (Monday to Sunday), or weekly (Monday to Friday). The cost for a bus pass depends on the duration of the bus pass, your age, and whether or not you are a student. You must show your bus pass each time you get on a bus. If you have a reduced fare bus pass, you must also show your identification. University students are eligible for bus passes at a reduced rate.

Keep your expired monthly bus passes and your bus pass receipts! You will need both the receipts and expired monthly bus passes if you want to claim the new tax credit for public transit use.

Bus tickets and bus passes can be purchased from ANSWERS INFORMATION BOOTH (1 st floor, University Centre). Many stores also sell bus tickets and passes. A complete listing of the locations where you can buy bus tickets and bus passes can be found under the "Bus Pass and Ticket Outlets" heading on the following Winnipeg Transit web page: http://winnipegtransit.com/en/fares/transit-fares/#passes.

TRANSFERS

A Transfer allows you to transfer between buses for free within a 60 minute period of time once you pay the cash or ticket fare on the first bus you take along your route. Transfers are free, but you must ask for one when you get on the bus and pay your fare.  They allow travel in any direction, including return trips on the same route, until the expiry time shown on the transfer.

If you need to take more than one bus to get to your destination and you do not have a bus pass, a transfer can save you a lot of money. Be sure to ask for the transfer when you get on your first bus along your route and pay your cash or ticket fare.

Once you have a transfer, you can use it to take any other transit bus or buses until it expires. Simply show the transfer to the driver when you get on your next bus and you will not have to pay the cash or ticket fare again until the transfer expires. Transfers are valid for approximately 60 minutes. The expiry time is shown on the transfer. Once the transfer expires, you will have to pay the cash or ticket fare again.

BUS STOPS

Not all buses stop at every bus stop. Express buses stop only at some of the bus stops along the route so that they can cover more distance quickly.

Each bus stop has a sign that indicates the bus stop location and which bus numbers will stop at that location.

GETTING ON & OFF THE BUS

During regular hours of operation, buses stop only at designated bus stops to let people on and off of the bus.

If you are standing at a bus stop, the bus will stop for you. You do not need to signal the bus driver.

You must pay your bus fare or show your bus pass when you enter the bus. If you will need a transfer, you must ask for it as you are getting on the bus.

After you get on the bus, move to the back of the bus to let other passengers enter and exit. The seats at the front of the bus are designated for seniors and people with mobility problems. These seats are called Courtesy Seats. If you are sitting in a courtesy seat and a senior or a person with a mobility problem gets on the bus, it is considered polite to offer your seat to them.

When you want to get off the bus, ring the bell before the bus reaches your designated stop. Exit by the rear doors whenever possible. On some buses, the rear doors are opened when the passenger moves a small gate located infront of the rear door. Other buses do not have a gate at the rear door. Instead, the rear doors on these buses are opened by pressing a vertical yellow strip of tape located on the door. The doors will remain open for approximately 3-4 seconds. As a courtesy to the passengers exiting behind you, keep your hand on the "tape strip" to have the doors remain open for them.

REQUEST STOP: For convenience and safety, Winnipeg Transit offiers Request Stop on all routes after 7:00pm for passengers who would like to get off the bus between regular stops. If you would like to access this service, you must inform the bus driver of where you would like to get off the bus a few blocks in advance. When using the Request Stop service, you must exit by the front door only. For safety reasons, the operator may be unable to stop at the exact location you have requested. Request Stop is in effect 7 days a week from 7:00 pm until end of service.

PLANNING YOUR ROUTE:

NAVIGO: Winnipeg Transit offers a web service called Navigo to help you plan your bus trip. Simply enter your starting point, ending point, and the time of day that you will be traveling and Navigo will show you what bus(es) to take, when to take them, where the bus stops are, and how long your trip (including walking time) will take.

To try this great online planner, go to http://www.winnipegtransit.com/and click on “Navigo”.

TELEBUS: Telebus is an automated schedule information system that allows you to check the time that a bus is schedule to arrive at a specific bus stop. Simply call 287-RIDE (7433) using a TouchTone phone and follow the menu prompts. You will need to know the five-digit bus stop number for the specific bus stop you are inquiring about. The bus stop number is printed on the bus stop sign. Each bus stop has a unique number.

BUS SCHEDULES & MAPS: Maps of each bus route and a schedule listing the times buses will arrive at major stops along the route can be found on the Winnipeg Transit web site. Paper copies of bus schedules and maps are available at Answers Information Booth (1 st floor, University Centre) and at major

NOTE:

  • Buses in Winnipeg DO NOT operate 24 hours a day. If you need to take a bus after midnight, be sure to check the bus schedule to ensure buses will be operating on your route.
  • The morning and evening rush hours (7:00 – 9:00am and 3:30 – 5:30pm) offer the most bus service.
  • Many routes have reduced bus service in the evenings, on weekends, and during holidays.

TIPS

Not all bus stops have a shelter or bench. Be prepared for the weather (dress warmly in winter and bring an umbrella if there is rain in the forecast).

During the winter, bus service may be slower than normal if the weather conditions are poor.

The cash fare for the bus varies according to your age and your student status.  When paying with cash, you must pay EXACT FARE on the bus. You can save money by buying bus tickets or a bus pass in advance.
