Emerging Leader Award

The Emerging Leader Award is an important way to recognize student leaders who make outstanding contributions to the University of Manitoba and our community.

If you have questions about the Emerging Leader Award, please contact studentlife@umanitoba.ca.

Please refer to the below for details on this award:

The Emerging Leader Award (ELA) is a way the University of Manitoba recognizes the outstanding contributions that students make to the enhancement of the institution and our community. The award was introduced in 2006 to recognize students who are committed to furthering our educational mission by contributing to the social, cultural or economic well-being of communities on and/or off campus, while encouraging cross cultural understanding and demonstrating sustained leadership and initiative that is worthy of recognition.

Award recipients are invited to and celebrated at the annual Emerging Leaders Dinner.

A University of Manitoba Emerging Leader is any current full-time or part-time University of Manitoba undergraduate or graduate student with a minimum 2.5 GPA, in any faculty, school or program that:

  • Supports the University's educational mission by contributing to the social, cultural or economic well-being of communities on campus (and/or additionally off campus)
  • Encourages cross-cultural understanding
  • Demonstrates sustained leadership and initiative that is worthy of recognition
  • Has completed at least one year of study at the University of Manitoba

Applicants and Referees should know that:

  • The Selection Committee defines leadership in its broadest sense
  • Applications will be evaluated on the quality, not quantity, of leadership described in their submission

Applicants who were selected as Emerging Leaders in the 2017/2018 school year are ineligible to re-apply, however students that were selected in a prior school year are welcome to reapply.

In order to gain a comprehensive view of your leadership contributions, two letters of support are required to complete your application. Failure to provide letters of support will result in an incomplete application and will not be considered by the Selection Committee.

One referee must be from a University of Manitoba staff or faculty member (who must be able to directly support your University of Manitoba involvement), and the second referee may be one of your choice. Referees may not be familial relations.

Letters of support may be submitted directly by the referee or by the applicant (if the applicant submits letters, they must be in non-editable formats, such as PDF).

A guide to writing letters of support can be found HERE.

Applications for the 2019 Emerging Leader Award are now closed.

Please submit your application using the online form in UMCommunityLINK. If you have not used this system before, you can sign in using your UMnetID, which will activate your account. If you experience any problems with the login process, please contact ccr@umanitoba.ca.

The application questions are available in the Applicant Guidelines, but must be submitted through this online form for consideration.

Award recipients are selected by a Selection Committee made up of students, staff and faculty. This committee takes all application information into account, including, but not limited to, how well an applicant meets the (above) award criteria, the quality of leadership described in answering the application questions, and the letters of support provided.

Up to 75 recipients are selected because the University of Manitoba has many students who have many talents; we want to celebrate the breadth and depth of our student leaders on campus in all their capacities.
