Workshop Abstract | The Chain Factory Simulation (Despins/Sammons)

The Chain Factory Simulation

Abstract:

Participants work in teams to create their own manufacturing enterprise. All teams are equipped with the same labor and capital, raw materials, quality expectations and firm orders for a week of production. Teams have time to plan their work process and then they move into a 5 day production scenario.

Breaks between production allow the team to re-assess and re-organize their work process. The production results of each group are posted throughout the exercise which in turn creates a competitive environment and adds some reality to the exercise.

A post-production discussion allows the teams to assess their level of teamness, and reflect on where the exercise can be used for education purposes.
