Learning a Living: Mediated Learning and Workforce Development

Abstract:

For some time, employer expectations have emphasized the employee's ability to learn. Within the Correctional Service of Canada, and, in any Adult Basic Education program anywhere, we encounter a clientele who have not been successful learners. Many of these learners are now in workplace training sessions.

The questions about teaching and training in these environments are really about learning. This stresses the need for a student-centred approach to education.

The role that Mediated Learning plays in such an approach can assist in preparing students and trainees for lifelong learning and for active participation in the New Economy. Cognitive Enrichment Advantage (CEA) assists learners to learn more effectively because it addresses, along with cognitive elements of learning, the often hidden needs of learners.

This hands-on workshop will demonstrate clearly the meaning of Mediated Learning and its relationship to teaching and training and will provide concrete examples of it use.
