Developing a Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition System
for Cook Apprentices - Aboriginal PLAR
Abstract:
A pilot project designed
to increase the number of Aboriginal persons in the Apprenticeship Cook
trade through the recognition of their prior learning was developed
through a partnership between the Centre for Education and Work, the
Manitoba Apprenticeship Branch and the Assesmbly of Manitoba Chiefs.
Funded by the Aboriginal
Single Window Initiative, Human Resources Development Canada, the project
has resulted in employment opportunities and career pathing for Aboriginal
cooks through the Apprenticeship system.
Industry-based journeyperson
Cooks were trained as Assessors and, in collaboration with the Apprenticeship
Branch, worked with the new Apprentices to identify prior learning and
assign Level I Cook Apprenticeship credit.
One exciting feature
of this project is the web-based self-assessment tool for Level I Cook
Apprentices, designed to increase accessibility to the Prior Learning
Assessment System.
This presentation
will discuss how to develop a Prior Learning Assessment project within
an Apprenticeship system, and share some of the tools and materials
developed through the process.
