I entered University with 'Mature' status. It has been many years since I have been in school and have had a career and kids in that time. I am running into some challenges that most typical students may not have.

:s
Confused Awe, that must be harsh!
Well, good luck, hope you find somebodyHappy
What are you taking at u of m by the way?

...i feel like a pre-mature now, lol! Happy That's awesome!

I started university at 35 in a science/phys-ed program -- I know what you mean about the transition process! Best piece of advice is to hang in there. It takes time for your routine to settle down and for you to experience success and as a result, an increased level of confidence. You will find your ability to apply concepts to real life experiences and to pull in-depth meaning from that connection is much greater than your younger student peers. You will get way more value for your educational dollar because of your "mature" status! And you will have the time of your life!!

Mature Students
Hey Connie -

If you plug in "mature" into the search area you will find at least two other profiles of mature students just like yourself looking to connnect ...there are others out there on campus!!

Unknown
Now hold on...
When you say "mature", you're talking about age, right?
We're not talking about a lack of fart jokes, and picking our noses and cooties, correct?
Am I on the right track here?

Hmmm, well, I'm 34 (although I must admit people think i'm in my mid-twenties! lol) and there are LOTS of booger picking, fart jokes, etc. around here... Oh wait! But most of it comes from having a preschooler!!!!! ROFL

Hey Connie
I know exactly how you feel. Im 26 and this is my first year. I feel pretty old in classes full of 18 year olds, im getting use to it know, but its taking a while. Its hard for me because my daughter is 8, so i kind of had to grow up a little faster then some. I just find it really hard to relate sometimes.

Re: connect with other "mature" students
Hello fellow mature students,

I feel like I actually have time to go on here and post something. I understand most of your woes. It's a big deal going back to school and being older than everyone else. I was pretty lonely during the first part of the term. I knew very few people here and most of them were younger not really understanding my situation. But I have met a few great people and campus life is turning out to be OK. I have some issues with the "institution" but all in all I am doing well. I can't wait for the term to be over so I can have a day off. I just want one day off. Tick, tick, tick...

Hope you all made it out alive.

Well I made it through my first semester!!

Me, me, me! I am a mature student too. I'm glad you made it through the first semester Connie. I had a rough go of it myself. I keep feeling like I'm constantly on the go. I'm only taking 3 classes a semeseter, but between that & working, I have a hard time finding the time to eat somedays!! My biggest hurdle is probably dealing with the fatigue that sets in. Who know learning, listening, & being attentive in class could take so much out of you!

mature u1
I am a mature u1.. gosh I hate that term. It would be different if we were the mature students and the fresh out of high schoolers were called the immature students Tongue Out It feels like joining the silver club!

I was walking around with my orientation leaders in the 'mature' group, when another group passed us, and one student said "look at all the old people!" I was shocked.. all of us were in our twenties.
It's hard and awkward to make friends in class.

"mature" is such an ugly word
I know what you mean. I'm in 1st year computer science (NOT U1) and I feel ancient. Granted there are others older than me in all my classes, but I don't think I'm OLD at 27...and I don't want to be "mature" if I don't have to, either!

What makes it easier for the "younger" crowd is that most of their friends from high school are all here with them. For me, I don't know anyone in my classes and like you said, it's hard to make friends in class without looking like a bit of a dork, like, "will you be my friend?" Tongue Out

Maybe a social gathering off-campus somewhere at a "grown-up" location would be a good way to meet others who are in the 24-35 (or better) category?

Okay, so let's hang out then!
Alright, I think we should meet for some good eats at degrees, or wiseguys sometime, or maybe at IQs and shoot some pool? Hmmmm, how about next Wednesday (Sept 19) at 6 pm? Ya, let me know if you're interested, and we can meet in front of Degrees, okay? Okay, cool I hope to hear from y'all!

w00t
Oooh! A night of 'mature' debauchery.. so long as it's sensible, and we are home by 11pm. Maybe we could have a tea party (ok ok, enough with the old jokes Tongue Out)

I'm totally in.

Hmmmm, and no other evening works for me this week...well maybe we could get together for lunch instead? Unfortunately I have class Monday & Wednesday from 12:30-1:30, but I can do lunch at 1:30. The rest of the week is good for normal lunch time.

That kinda works for me.. I don't have class on m&w until 2:30. It will have to be short and sweet Tongue Out. Better than nothing.

Who else is in?

Yeah, me too...you wouldn't happen to be in Math Skills, would you?

Thursdays aren't great, either, as I have Grant's tutoring for STAT 1000 from 6:30-9:30.

After 9 on Wednesday would be good though, I guess, since I'll be at school anyway.

Re: Okay, so let's hang out then!
Ah that's too late man, I only stay up late on Friday and Saturday. Ah well, I'm sure we'll work something out eventually. Hey MissKristin looks like it's just you and me who can do lunch, so I'm thinking maybe we should wait for more people to come out before we do anything. What do you think?

Yeah it's math skills.. but it's too hard, and moving too fast for me. I can't keep up, and it's interfering with my other classes. I'm not a math person in general never mind precal. I'm just going to change my major and drop the class.

SOOO my evenings are free now! Happy

I agree with this.. Who wants to do lunch? or as I said above, I am dropping a class, so my evenings are free now.

Allrighty then...
I don't know how many people are following this thread...only the 3 of us since this September have posted. I think using MSN, email or even Facebook might be better. Anyway, lunch is good for me...just say when.

MissKristin, too bad about Math Skills...I think you were in my class. I dropped MATH 1500 to catch up...math sucks. Kinda glad I didn't go engineering...

I bet I was.. if it was on m&w from 7-9 then yeah. well.. we can't all have math minds, can we? I'll just have to make my mark in the 'soft sciences' Wink

Re: Allrighty then...
I love math.

Well, math doesn't REALLY suck, I've just struggled with it my entire academic life. I actually enjoy the challenge sometimes. It's kind of inevitable that it would catch up with me given my profession.

Hi
Hey guys,
Saw the mature student thread and just wanted to drop in and say hi.
I haven`t really talked to too many people in campus, let alone mature students.
So how are classes going for everyone? I am finding the homework load to be ridiculous! Maybe I just don't know how to study anymore.
Ditto on the soft sciences MissKristin, math is beyond me so I'll stay as far away as possible.

Re: Hi
Hey Eris,

If you're taking five courses, then the homework load will always be crazy. So say goodbye to weekends (if you want to be an A student, that is)! The trick is to take a couple of hours a day to relax, doing something you enjoy, like going to the gym. I enjoy going to the gym because it is a good stress reliever and gets those endorphins going!

Yo math wizard!
Yeah AEREO, don't worry about it because the more you do it the better you'll get at it. I used to suck at math, but I kept at it and became an A student. LOL, computer science and math go hand in hand, so you're stuck with it- haha!

So...
Well I hope everyone is settled into their studies for this semester. Now are we going to get together before the mid term rush? During the day seems difficult due to the crowdedness (is that a word?), so off campus may be an idea. I've always liked Margarita Monday's at Earl's, but I'm easy going, I'll try anything twice. Haven't had much opportunity to hang out with anyone at school.

Re: So...
Yeah sounds good AEREO, this week I'm busy, but next week let's go out for supper somewhere. Kristin you in?

hells yeah
Darn tootin' I'm so in! Happy name the time and the place!

hm
Hey, I just got on VLC, and noticed this thread. I'm 27 and just starting University, so I think it'd be cool to meet other people around the same age group. After all, it is mostly a younger population. So yeah, I'm down with um.. meeting new similar aged people and all that.

Re: hm
Wow, I started this thread last year and its nice to see a few more people involved! (although not me so much! lol) If it works I would love to join you guys for a coffee, drink, whatever!! At least no one would ID us!! lol Good to see you here!

MEET & EAT
The only day I am available next week is Wednesday, so hopefully that day works for you. So do you want to meet at Earl's on Pembina at 6pm for supper then?

I'm there
Sounds good to me!
Hehehe I am sitting in Degrees right now, bein' a dork stick on my laptop Tongue Out

table
We should decide what to call the table, so that who ever comes, can just say ___ table and the waitress can show them the way, seeing as we don't really know what each other looks from here. Unless you want me to wear my snorkel gear... I can have that arranged.

I'm in
Well sounds good, then. How about we put in a reservation for "Young"? Get it? LOL. As in, we're not? Open Smile

I'll make the reservation tomorrow.
Okay, I'll call tomorrow and make a reservation under 'young'. So, if anyone else on here wants to join us, let me know by tomorrow, otherwise I will make the reservation for three.

Yes, more girls.
Yeah, only the three of us it seems. Hey Kristin if you feel uncomfortable going I completely understand, and we can go another time when you recruit some more girls to come out.

nah
No, thats ok.. I will be fine. We'll be in a public place. No if it were to one of your houses for dinner, I might feel threatened.

I'll be there Happy

ok!
see you tomorrow Happy

minimum age requirement?
hey y'all...i can see that this thread's not been in discussion for a while but it's worth a shot...is there a "minimum age requirement" to be considered a "mature" student?

Officially, I think U of M considers a mature student as anyone older than 21, for the purposes of admission. However I think one could argur for the purpose of this discussion that if you feel you are significantly older than the rest of your classmates, you are a "mature student".

Then again, as was pointed out earlier...the term "mature" is used loosely Tongue Out

For those of you who are getting ready to graduate...
Let’s face it, “real life” after university can be expensive, that’s why Bison Recreation Services at the University of Manitoba is now offering a new membership to students who are graduating or leaving university. As long as you keep your membership active you will always pay the Student Membership price! The current price for a 12 month membership is $128, that’s a savings of $122 compared to the alumni rate, and a savings of over $400 compared to other major fitness facilities. We also have 1, 4, and 8 month memberships available.

Don’t miss out on this great opportunity! For more information go online to

http://www.umanitoba.ca/faculties/kinrec/bsal/programs/membership/forever.php

or talk to a Customer Service Representative at the Frank Kennedy or Joe Doupe Centre.
