meet new people and make more friends
In my first year at school, I didn't really meet anyone. So, this year I am really hoping to get to know more people and maybe end up with a few good friends from school.

Re: meet new people and make more friends
I'm super excited about meeting more people this year too. I helped with the U1 Orientation yesterday and today (so I was able to meet lots of people)- so much fun! I'm totally helping again next year! I noticed we're in the same program and in the same year - maybe we'll have some classes together!

\"kinda orientation\" and \"kinda unorganized\"? he-he, I strongly agree with you!

Re: meet new people and make more friends
I'm also looking forward to meet new people and make more friends. I'm always interested in learning new cultures and understanding different types of people out there and VLC has done a great job in connected students together...
~cheers.

Re: meet new people and make more friends
I am pretty much in the same boat as umMars32. First year I pretty much went to work, went to school, and if I had time, hung out with old friends from High School. Never really go to meet or hang out with anyone new. Hopefully I can meet more people this year.

speaking Spanish
I work at the University and would like to practise Spanish with a native speaker.

Speaking Spanish and Meeting new people.
Hey Adrian I speak spanish kinda fluently...I could help some lmao.

Yeah U1 orentation was kind unorganized chaos but hey free stuff and left to hang with friends and explore the tunnels.

Anyways I'm looking for people to hang out with since all my friends have class at diffrent times and I'm sitting here at the UC bored at 10:20...I could go home but i kinda wanna make it worth comming all the way out here. Thurday i just have my Intro to uni class and then i am done for the day at 9:45.

Re: meet new people and make more friends
Alright so we have different people who can speak variety of different languages. Thats cool. I also know 2 other languages. By the way, if anyone wants to add me to their contact list and be friends. You are all welcome.. I'm fairly easy going kinda person and maybe a bit shy at times? LOL ..

Re: meet new people and make more friends
Hey :] This is my first year here and I'm hoping to meet some new people around campus and in my classes. Took two years off and I know hardly here.

I didn't mind the orientation, except for the morning sessions - like the RESPECT and the learning to swim or whatnot.

Re: meet new people and make more friends
I'm not really new here, but it'll be my first year On-Campus...I've been doing my first 12 credit hours of U1 through Distnace Education, and have been home schooled almost all of my high school years.

I'm really worried about not meeting new people because when I went to the Orientation, everyone seemed to have their own "cliques", and I was too shy to go and force my way in, bwuahaha.

Buenos días Jairo,
I should have been watching for messages. Sorry I didn't read yours sooner. Anyway, we can use my office in the Admin Building to get together. Can you get into my profile and send me an e-mail? You can also find my e-mail address on the UM home page under Search then People.
Adrian

Re: speaking Spanish
¡Hola gente!

I also feel kind of lonely, knowing just a few people around. It would be terrific to meet some of you guys y practicar un poquito el español, eh? Happy

Party!?
W00t i think this is the most popular topic on the VLC, anyways if anyone wants to add me my MSN is Jairo_dapyro@hotmail.com

MSN?
Here is my MSN too: elwebmaster@eresmas.com
Don't wonder, it's MSN never mind that it doesn't have hotmail.com in it Happy
Ok, that's for now.
BTW. I just found out that I am in the same class as Jairo_Dapyro in one of our courses, so Virtual Learning Commons probably really works when it comes to meeting people Happy And the information in the Study Skills section sounds helpful, too.

You met ME....

Bwuahaha...and once you go Krista - you never go back...hahaha!

New People
This is my first year at the U of M and I'm interested in meeting new people. I'm thinking of maybe joining a student group or volunteering for stuff.

It's strange that we want to meet new people, yet we spend a whole day on campus surronded by strangers. I guess it's just hard approaching someone and striking up a conversation.

Most of my classes and my locker are located around Tier-Fletcher Argue so thats where I hang out. My MSN is: scott_person@hotmail.com

Hey there, I'm taking sociology and comp usage by Dist ED. Should be okay, hopefully not too much work I hope. Lots of ready already in sociology!

Sociology is a lot of reading. Really a lot. My proffessor is Raymond Foui and I think he is really nice, he explains everything very vividly and it's much easier to understand the topics after attending a lecture with him. But it's still difficult, well...it's not difficult but it's a lot of material and requires some dedication.
Comp Usage should be easy I guess...at least to me it sounds like waste of time...but well I am in CS.

I got A+ in Comp Usage last year! It's a definate class to take if you need an extra "easy credit"! Some assignments might drive you crazy though, they are kind of long... But each time i did NOT study for my quiz i was getting all questions right... So I don't know, that class is sort of weird when it comes to figuring out your "learning techniques"

Hello
Hello everybody, I am also new to Winnipeg and I would love to meet some people. U1 Orintation was very unorganized, I lost my homeroom both days so I ended up on my own.

I completely agree with you that U1 Orientation was lacking organization. I couldn't eat anything during the two days, I had to run from one session to another, I couldn't attend all the sessions I wanted to (because there were no slots) and most of the other events were absolute waste of time.

I would also love to meet some people. Do you live on-campus? Do you have MSN or something?

Hey everyone...
I am not new in winnipeg....but kinda shy(as u know it)...I was just wondering if anyone goes to any concerts sometime...u know those shows by cover bands..I went to THE ZOO a few times, and it felt awesome! So anyone out there?

Ha ha U1 Orientation...I didnt even have a homeroom...they just sent me to my buddies homeroom and then we just skipped noth days, hung out with a group of people and explored the campus on our own terms.

P.S. You've come to the right place for metting new people. Just take the initiative to contact some of them and yeah see what happens Tongue Out

Re: Hello
Well the way my courses work, I have a math class from 7:00-9:30, roughly, at night on Wednsday.
I am probably be going to either I.Q.'s or Big Guy's on these nights. Because I really have nothing to do other than sit around and wait for a bus. Anyone else in a similar situation?
If anyone wants to meet up, just post here, or IM me, or something. We could maybe get a few people from here together one day, which would be cool.

Hello
I'm new to Winnipeg too. I've come from Calgary and I heart a good music scene which I've heard exists(possibly existed) here. I don't really know anyone and classes are so huge I rarely sit beside the same person twice. Yeah...what else...I love Family Guy and Arrested Development like the rest of the world. I spent most my time backhome snowboarding in the winter, soooo not too sure what to do out here. If anyone wants some laid back company during the school year give me shout and we'll see if we have anything in common.

Re: Hey everyone...
I just read your profile and saw that you like Pink Floyd and The Doors, two of my top favorite bands. I actually might be going to the Zoo tonight for a friend's metal show, not exactly my thing, my good enough.

oh
oh cool, I guess I missed it.Anyway, I am going this thursday, heard some bands will be there.

Hey
Ya in Intro to university very boring and lots of essays which i suck at. From the country myself. Inwood manitba to be specfic if anybody nows where thatis eh,

Cowpokes
I decided to visit upon suggestion by a TA... something I'm paying for but didn't realize existed... go figure.

I hate to break it to you guys, but there are lots of things that don't measure up at this university, and U1 is just one of many on the list.

A big hello to my fellow cohorts from Alberta and Yukon Girl. Gas is ten cents cheaper at home...ummm... just thought I'd mention that.

Where's a good place to study on campus - comfortable and quiet? I'm a hermit a lot of the time and I enjoy periodic solitary confinement.

I think its mostly because they are either tired stressed or not enjoying their classes. I know I'm probably one of them. If you want people to be more cheerful, just smile at them, usually they smile back. Happy just a suggestion

Hi! I can relate to that last part u wrote, I love friends also, but finding it really hard to make any as well, even though I was really popular in high school lol! I rarely sit with the same ppl in my classes, and I think I've lost my charm...I don't have the energy for anything most of the time. I'm always going straight home after my classes...maybe that's why.
Also, to the comments about the Intro to Uni course, I dropped out of that one. Didn't like it as well.

yeah theres so many people around, but they all look like they're so engrossed in their own little world, and dont want to be disturbed at all.
Its kind of frustrating to see so many people, but to still have no-one to talk to.

You're in intro to uni too hey? Who is your professor? I'm taking that course as well, and to be honest, I have no desire to go to that class at all. To top it off, there's a midterm tomorrow. I am definitely not prepared or in the mood to go. Has anyone actually read all of those "required readings" or does everyone find alot of the information to be common sense as well?

Don't worry, you are definitely not alone on this one. I'm also a first year, and I haven't really met many people yet. Instead, I've stuck to the few friends that have come here from my hometown. Still, I'd like to meet some new people, and who knows, maybe go out of my comfort zone and try something new. haha

kind of seems like there should be some thing called, "this is the place to make friends and hang out club" Wink

yeah this place is too huge to really start forming connections with ppl like one would do in high school. seems that the trend goes as such: get to uni, not really know any ppl, stick to ppl u went to school with & yeah...that's pretty much it

re: meet new people and make new friends
To make friends at university some of the best things to try doing are a) go down to a student group that interests you and hang out there with people with common interests b) talk to the people in your classes and DON'T take classes with your old high school friends since it discourages meeting new people c) after class is over DON'T just go home, you meet waaaay more people and have waaay more fun at the university after classes are over. just going down to one of the computer labs or having dinner or watching a movie in one of the student lounges you end up running into many people you know from your classes/student groups and can have a fun time just hanging out/studying/having dinner or coffee with them. Most of all DON'T be afraid to talk to strangers, everyone wants a new friend so usually you won't get brushed off if you have something interesting to say.

For those of you that like to sing, I'd encourage you to visit the student group SMART (Searching for Meaningful Answers Required Today). They meet every Wednesday at 5:30pm. I'm a part of the group and its lots of fun and a good way to relax and meet new people! For more info email smartfellowship@gmail.com and they will be happy to give you more information...
