Yup, I'm taking Biology. I must tell you, I am finding it very hard to grasp the stuff compared to my other at-university classes. What are you taking DE?

I'm just not always sure what the professor expects. Are we supposed to memorize all the stuff from the book for the final exam???

Re: wants to meet people who are taking DE courses...
yah, I'm not sure what the professor expects sometimes - whether we are to memorize it all or what....b/c I know I won't be memorizing it all!!!

So how are you doing with your course? I have NOT been doing well taking notes as I read the book. I feel like when it comes to the exam, I will SUCK.

Studying for Biology at a distance
I have taken a LOT if distance courses, so I know where you are coming from. Have you tried building concept maps for your notes? If you start with the learning objectives for the section you are studying, and then as you read draw out the links to the ideas presented in the text - that might help make things become a bit clearer. In the "How to Write an Academic" paper section on the "Writing" link (left hand side of the VLC) there is a section in there on creating mind maps for depicting ideas. This can also be used as a way to create your study notes. Sometimes creating the picture helps to make the connections. I would also talk to someone at the Learning Assistance Center to get some tips on how to take good notes. I am sure they will know some techniques.

Awsome ideas SkaterGrl, especially about talking to someone at the L.A.C. I'm going to have to do that this coming week before there is no hope of catching up.

Connie --

How are the courses going? Well, I hope. Sometimes it takes a bit to get your feet under you. Hope you are off and running now!

I'm taking 4 this semester, along with one that I actually go to the campus for. It's niuce to be able to work on them when I want, rathe than when a prof tells me to.

DE
I am taking 4 courses too all in social sciences. I am finding them interesting though so everything is sinking into thy brain. I think the Exam will be the toughest since not having your professor dictate what will be on it. There is just way too much information to sort through and when u are a U1 student it all seems important to know. I am not going to stress about it though just take it a few hours at a time each day.

Re: DE
Might be worth emailing the prof. a few weeks before the exam and asking how it will be layed out and maybe some sample questions to give you an idea. Most people I've talked to love taking DE courses. Not for me though...

DE - Exam
All I can say, is that I've double checked and the course I'm taking this semester doesn't have a final exam, yippee! A few of my friends have also taken DE courses and overall I've done the best as I knew what to expect the most. I took correspondence courses for Grade 2 when my family spend three months in Australia and Grade 6 after missing months of school in Grade 5 and still was ahead of the rest of the class.

The biggest problem I have is the ability to bounce things off others. I aced the Math and Environmental Science courses as there were more formal answers. The Math class we did really well getting together online and going over our answers together, I've found the more 'thinking' classes, English Lit, History, Philosophy, where one really needs the discussion, it doesn't happen.
