find some people to jam with, then do it up

So the idea is to get yourself a cheap guitar to learn on, right? I think I get it.
So is it better to learn guitar first, then bass?
if you step on it...the shielding will degrade...
if you pull on the jacks, the sauldering will come apart, and you'll get a loose connection. just a fact of life! i've been using planet waves chords for awhile and they've been treating me just fine. little bit more upfront, but they've lasted much longer then the normal no name crap.

What bass and amp you buy depends on your needs as a bassist. If you plan on jamming with friends, or joining a band, you are going to need a bass amplifier that is going to be powerfull enough to complete volume wise with drums and a loud guitar amp. This means at the very least 100 watts, and more then 1 ten inch speaker. The bass you buy is subjective, and depends on your style, and the sound you like. Fretless? 22-24 frets? Active or Passive Electronics? All things to consider when buying a bass.

You may also want to look at the used market. My bass is a Warwick Corvette that usually runs over $1000, I was able to find it on ebay for under $600. Look around, and be sure to play lots of different basses from different market segments, i.e. cheap, and very expensive basses. Also, take someone along to the guitar store that has some experience. Most importantly, use your ears! If it sounds good to you, then it is good.

thats a really objective question. on one side, 4 strings versus 6, but on the other side, the strings are 2 or 3 times as thick and require hand strength to play fast without buzzing. im not a guitar player so maybe Andy can attest to that side.

it's not better to learn either first. they are distinct instruments, just as a violin and a cello are. if you find yourself naturally drawn to one of the other, for whatever reason, go with it! if you're not sure if it's for you, get a cheap or used instrument first and check it out. if you get into it, then you can make an invenstment in a reasonable one. no sense in wasting money! remember, good musical gear holds its value very well, so if you spend alot, you're not necessarily going to loose alot later.

if you're going for the ladies, better try lead guitar. everyone knows the bassist gets the roadies.

Bassist and drummer get the leftovers.
But if anyone's up for a bit of good jamming you could count me in. I'm a guitarist and have been known (though rarely) to venture into the vocals range.
Hardest things to find are drummers and locations (which very often come together).

first time on vlc in a long time.
i play an Ibanez gsr100 through a dean markley K-20BX amp. and my stupid cord just bit the big one. arent cords supposed to NOT have to be replaced after a year?
P.O.S!
same with the amp. not exactly top of the line.
