Find someone who knows how to write music

Writing is easy. Writing MUSIC is way harder. Not only do you have to know how to write the actual notes, you've got to be able to write the lyrics as well - and then tie it all together!
I salute the music writers out there.

I tought myself how to play guitar and bass by writing music. The music I write doesnt involve lyrics, as I don't have a voice to speak of(hah!), but I live for composing melodies, rhythms, and ideas.
Writing and writing music are not that dissimilare. To write a paragraph you need words, which make up sentances. To write a piece of music, you need melodies, riffs, or passages that make up a movement, verse, chorus, or song. In both cases you are communicating ideas and emotions. It's just that it's alot easier to describe a certain feeling without having to use words!
I think the single most important to writing good music is to use your heart and your ears. Forget everything you know about musical theory, what's right and traditionally acceptable, and be free to experiment.

Oh, I can write. Except I'm limited to "lyrics only" right now.
I was wondering, how did you start writing music in the first place?
Who taught you? How'd you learn?

I'm okay at melodies, but I suck at writing lyrics.. I have a couple songs I've written, they're both kinda rock/pop though and I don't even like that kind of music.. my friends actually want me to record for the UM radio, but meh
I also have a computer program where you can write the music and print it out all purty-like, you can write for any instrument

I have some modest recording means for simple arrangements and can get pretty damn good results. If you ever want to record something, give me a holler.

You start by picking up an instrument. Simple as that.

you know, i answered this, and it seemed to disapear..
For piano, it's mostly classical based, with a bit of a slav note to it. Not sure why, just seems to have that tonality. Short melodies and paterns, little waltzes.
For bass, mostly jazzish riffs, although I do enjoy dancy death disco grooves. I enjoy lines that interact with the melody but keep the direction of a song.
For guitar, everything and anything. I started out playing metal and heavy rock, and progressed into "indie", garage rock, classic rock, and bits of jazz over the past 6 years. I can only play as far as I can write or figure out by ear. I know very few songs...Love wierd chord shapes and minor melodie.
Now that the self indulgence is over, come jam.

if anyones interested, i could put on a little writing clinic...might even be able to show you how. i don't have a great grasp on theory, but there are certain ideas that i think are shared by alot of songwriters and musicians. if anyones interested in learning, the ignorant way, by EAR, let me know. any other questions are welcome.
