make the VLC better
I am one of the people involved with 'managing' the Virtual Learning Commons. We are looking for suggestions on how to make the VLC better. We need to hear from you. What's missing? What would make the VLC better? You can send your comments or suggestions to this 'to do,' or to the email listed below.

We are also looking for a couple of students to volunteer to meet with us to help us make the VLC better. Specifically, we are looking for one undergraduate and one graduate student to serve on the VLC committee. We meet once a month. If you're interested let me know by emailing tittenbe@cc.umanitoba.ca.

What's missing?
The people, mostly.

How do we get more people? Is everyone on Facebook and MySpace?

Poor guy
Facebook, Myspace, Friendster, Hi5. Now you can't honestly be surprised can you?
You've got to think about it from the viewpoint of the student - I'm sure you know this already.

What is on this site that will keep people coming back? What lasting activity can they feel excited to get to over here?
Myspace, for example. is highly personalized. People spend time trying to make themselves stand out as different. Here we have cute little pictures that sit beside our names.
Myspace is not seriously monitored. It gives off the impression that it's users are free to discuss whatever they wish, no boundries in subject matter. VLC can't even pretend to be this open-ended.
Myspace offers IM and other more direct forms of conversing wheras VLC is stuck with message boards essentially. It takes far to long from message to message to keep people intersted. For example you sent you're response on March 20th, and had to wait until now to get a response. Who knows if you're even going to read it? You may have given up looking and I wouldn't be able to blame you.

I feel sorry for you. Look, even your icon beside your name looks tired and depressed. Look at him there! You seem earnestly interested in making this VLC thing fly, but alas! you've got so little to work with.

I can almost picture the Peter T. dream myself. An entire university connected in happy conversation, day in and day out - and all because of you.
After all, you're right about one thing: a 'university based' communication central would be way cooler than anything as impersonal and broad as Myspace or Facebook. The potential, at least, is always in your favour.

poor guy
Thanks for your honest comments. I do want this thing to work, but I need help. I need to get more feedback from stduents like you.

Are you willing to help us make the VLC better? I'd like to talk more with you. Email me at tittenbe@cc.umanitoba.ca if you are interested.
