Citing Sources: even images!

Welcome to Citing Sources designed to help you with creating bibliographies for your research assignments.

This module will show you how to cite the sources and images that you have used to create your project, journal and essay. It will also show you how to easily create a bibliography from your literature review with Refworks.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this module you should be able to:

  • Choose the appropriate style guide for your bibliography;
  • Be able to cite sources from both print and electronic (WWW) formats;
  • Be able to create footnotes and endnotes;
  • Be able to cite images from either books, digital databases and the WWW in the approprite format;

Your academic paper must include a listing of your references and citations. Ask your professor which style should be used for your paper. Check your documentation according to your particular discipline, in general you will be using these:

  • humanities subjects use either MLA or the Chicago/Turabian (footnote) styles;
  • social-science subjects use APA style

Refer to the appropriate style manual for the system you will use.

Key Style Citation Guides
    If you found an image in a book or journal, you will need to include this basic information under the image:
  • Name of designer/architect
  • Title of the work/building
  • Date
  • City or Country
    APA Style:
  • Artist (last name, first name), artist’s role (in parentheses i.e. Artist, Architect), title, the work type, in brackets [Painting, Cathedral, Chair], country of origin or city, and state, and repository.

    To cite the information in your bibliography, you will need the following information.
  • If you found the image in a book:

  • the author, title, publisher information, date, page, figure or plate number of the reproduction.
  • If you found the image in a journal:

  • the author,article title, journal title,vol./no., page and figure number.
  • If you found the image online you will need:

  • an access date, the web site address (URL) and in some cases an image ID number.

What is the easiest way to make a bibliography?

RefWorks is a bibliographic management software that allows you to store, manipulate, and automatically format citations for the materials referenced in your research.

RefWorks is available free to students and faculty at the U of M. You need to authenticate and sign in to use Refworks. The U of M Libraries offers free
