The main objectives of CAGS are to promote excellence in graduate education; to foster research, scholarship, and creative activity among those involved in graduate studies; and to serve as a catalyst for the development and exchange of information about graduate matters among universities, the granting councils, graduate student organizations, and other interested or related organizations or entities. CAGS also encourages the fair and equitable treatment of all graduate students in all member institutions and promotes policies, practices and procedures with respect to all matters pertaining to graduate education. Together they contain over 2,000,000 volumes, subscribe to over 15,800 serials, hold a variety of materials in microform and multimedia formats, and provide access to both local and remote databases. The financial aid programs help students meet the cost of their education, while the awards programs recognize and reward students for their academic and other achievements. The Security Services Department provides safety for all persons who visit or are on the U of M Campus. This is accomplished in a number of different ways. One way is to develop proactive programs such as Safe Walk that provides an escort on the campus for anyone who requests one. This service is provided 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Providing safety to all those on campus is also accomplished by promptly responding to all calls for service, patrolling in a visible manner, securing buildings, and interacting with students, staff, and the public. The UM Security Services Department works to establish and cultivate a positive presence within the University community and to communicate with individuals, committees, groups, and other off campus associated agencies on crime prevention and security related issues.
