How Do I Find a Journal?

To find journals you will use the online Library Catalogue BISON. There are a number of ways you can search BISON for journals:

• by keyword and limiting format to journal
  
• periodical title(browse) in the drop down menu.

Recap of Steps to Finding Journals

1. To find journals, go to the
   Libraries' Home Page
   Click on Search Library Catalogue (Bison) in the left column. Type in journal title and then choose Journal Title from the drop down menu in the next box.
2. Or type in your keywords and limit format to journal and click the Search button..
3. BISON (Library Catalogue) will display the relevant titles listed chronologically from newest to oldest.
4. Click on Full description to see details about the journals and their locations. You should note:
   • Which library the journal is in.
   • Where in the library the journal is found.
   • If the journal is signed out or on the shelf.
   • The call number of the journal. Call numbers are located at the bottom right hand side of the record, above the shelving location.

How Do I Find the Journals in the Library

The journals in the Architecture/Fine Arts Library are located in open bookshelves in the library, with a few available online. Most of the journals are located in the Periodical Reading Room on the first floor of the library. The current issues are housed in alphabetical order in "pigeon hole" shelving to your immediate left upon entering the Reading Room. These journals cannot be signed out, as they are the latest issue.

Take note of the call number on the cover. These point to earlier issues of the same journal that can be signed out for overnight loan. The previous issues of journals are located in the shelving area of the Reading Room. The journals are arranged in order according to call numbers.

At the end of each bookshelf is a sign to tell you the range of call numbers that are located on that bookshelf.

Journals/Magazines

Research papers will require you to write for an academic audience and to use academic and scholarly journals. Journals tend to cover more specific and current topics than books. This is where your professors publish their research in the forms of essays, case studies, projects, reviews, critiques and reports.

Evaluating articles

You'll encounter articles that come from two different sources: popular magazines and scholarly journals. While popular magazine articles are sometimes acceptable sources for research assignments, many instructors expect you to use scholarly journal articles. Being familiar with the differences between scholarly journal articles and popular magazine articles will help you evaluate articles for your assignments.

How is the journal/magazine laid out? How is it organized?

Usually published once per week or once per month. Geared to the general public. Articles are generally shorter. Articles not always signed. Cover a wide range of topics. Broadly summarize research and current issues. Contain many advertisements and photographs.	Usually published on a monthly, bi-monthly or quarterly basis. Evaluated by and geared to scholars, researchers or professionals. Articles are always signed. Contain articles with in-depth analysis. Explain research method- ology and research findings: have bibliographies. Usually sponsored by an academic or professional organization.
